Hip and Hyperlocal: Explore one of Santa Monica‘s Coolest Neighborhoods

This one may sound eccentric, but hear me out. Santa Monica Airport might be, first and foremost, an airport (for now). But there’s a lot more to this place than planes.

Along with the Museum of Flying, the Santa Monica Airport offers two parks- one is a highly rated off leash dog park, restaurants, event spaces, a flying school and a campus of Santa Monica City College. It’s a unique spot for an afternoon of exploration.

At four acre Airport Park you can exercise at the “pedestrian runway,” a two-way multi-purpose track with distances marked by graphics just like the ones painted for airplane traffic on a tarmac. The runway is surrounded by a network of fitness options, from ping pong tables to slacklines- even a communal yoga mat.

The Museum of Flying celebrates the elegance and romance of the golden age of air travel, and over the years has been host to events and exhibitions including a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, aviation pioneers and the original Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts.

Not far from the airport, revisit gentler times at beautiful Douglas Park, named for aviation pioneer Donald Douglas, who opened his factory and airfield on the site of a former movie studio in 1922. His test pilots had to steer away from a line of eucalyptus trees along Wilshire, and bigger planes were wheeled through the streets of Santa Monica to Clover Field. In 1927 the factory relocated to Clover Field (now known as the Santa Monica Airport)

Since 1949, Douglas Park has been home to a clubhouse and lawn bowling green (similar to Italian bocce) and, and is still used for the game. The park, with its three historic ponds connected by streams, was restored in the early 2000s.

Fans of outsider art shouldn’t miss a trip to the Farnham’s Tile House.

Mirrored, shiny surfaces glitter in the sunshine at Aziz and Louise Farnam’s 1930s bungalow. Some of the highlights of the mosaic: a psychedelic Hollywood Sign with dinner plates for the O’s, a portrait of Amiel’s pet macaw and a life-size apple tree. The house has been featured in the national press, and won a TLC contest for interesting California houses.

Since 2012, Dogtown Coffee has been a sort of shrine to Southern California skateboarding history. Skateboarding had taken a backseat to surfing locally until the Zephyr Team began winning competitions with a dynamic, surf-oriented style, taking the sport in a whole new direction.

When the former Jeff Ho Surfboards and Zephyr Productions Skateboard shop (1971) was about to be torn down to make way for condominiums, the city of Santa Monica gave the building landmark status, thus protecting it from demolition. The shop honors the sport’s legacy with photos, murals and original Zephyr boards, which hang suspended from the ceiling.

    Before You Go:

On the menu: Everything from familiar espresso drinks to creations like a cappuccino enhanced with chaga mushrooms and monk fruit. Locals rave over the breakfast burritos.

Between morning beachside tanning sessions and long bike rides through Santa Monica into Venice, it’s time to take a break from the sand and get that true Hollywood feel. Just about 20 minutes inland, a tour at Sony Pictures Studios awaits, where you’ll be transported to the classical era of cinema.

Originally known as MGM Studios, and home to some of our favorite childhood classics like The Wizard of Oz and Singin’ in the Rain, Sony Pictures Studios is a time capsule of pop culture trivia. A tour around the lot will take you to iconic spots like the Ghostbusters mobile, or an actual yellow brick from THE iconic road. Pass by the Judy Garland Building, or by the Happy Madison production office where if you’re lucky, you’ll catch Adam Sandler hanging outside. The tour guide will amaze you with endless movie and studio fun facts, showing you which legendary movies were shot behind each set of elephant doors (the name for big sliding studio doors.) Other popular shows like Shark Tank, Wheel of Fortune, and Insecure share their writing and production with the lot. While eating lunch at the commissary, or picking up a coffee at the cafe on-site, the chances of spotting a celebrity are high!

Tickets start at $50, with VIP Lunch tour upgrades available. Get your tickets online now!

    L.A.’s Beach Body Background

Originating in the 1930s, Original Muscle Beach was like any other park, maintained by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. It hadn’t earned its title until the 1940s, as gymnastic and acrobatic exhibitions attracted anywhere from wrestlers and circus performers to celebrities and bodybuilders. Little by little, beachgoers contributed their equipment, expanding the park as a community; equipment including parallel bars, rings, ropes, and benches you can still work out with today!

Just a 15-minute bike ride down the popular and beautiful Santa Monica Bike Path, you’ll come across Venice Beach, with more culture waiting to unfold before you. By the time the fitness movement in California took off in 1989, just two blocks north of Venice Boulevard erupted Muscle Beach Venice, where beachgoers could focus more on the barbell, bodybuilding, and weightlifting. Celebrities like Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger have trained in the weight pen, amping the park’s popularity.

Aside from the fitness parks, those who choose an edgier form of burning calories make their way to the trendy Venice Beach Skate Park, located conveniently on the Ocean Front Walk area. Known as the birthplace of modern skateboarding, the city of Venice finally built the park in 2009, bringing this community together and creating a buzzing hub for tourists. Aside from skateboarders, you’ll also see lots of roller skaters grooving to their music, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a choreographed dance on wheels!

California is a beautifully dynamic state, full of creative people and wonderful displays. If your fall trip brings you all the way out to the west coast, we suggest that you make a stop at the California Heritage Museum right around the corner. This sweet little museum is situated in the heart of Santa Monica in a historic home that was once owned by Roy Jones, son of the founder of Santa Monica. In the 1970s, this historic home was completely moved from its original location to the center of Main Street and declared an Official City Landmark. This landmark now holds rotating exhibits and lots of unique collections throughout the year. Aside from the obvious art that is included in a visit to the Roy Jones house, you can find a food truck festival every Tuesday night, our local farmers market every Sunday morning, and through the end of the month, an annual flea market in this exact location. Complete your Santa Monica visit in true Californian fashion, right in the heart of Main Street.

Imagine the sun rising over the golden sands of the Pacific coastline during your morning walk. Santa Monica beaches are the most beautiful at dawn. Start your day with a light stroll to increase your oxygen while connecting with nature.

Walking on the sand provides more of a workout than you might think. It can help activate dormant muscles and utilize the tendons that have been cruising you through life. Each step on the sand uses 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy than walking on a hard surface. Plus, the environment is so relaxing that you will likely go further and for longer than you realize.

So, why not open your mind and connect with Mother Nature while breaking a sweat? Depending on the time of day, you will also be absorbing Vitamin D from the sun rays. For an added dose of fun, take off your shoes and feel the soft sand under your feet, a perfect start to any day spent in Santa Monica.

Break a Sweat Running Through the Scenic Streets of Santa Monica

Biking, skateboarding, and hiking are all zesty ways to explore our city, but if you are an avid runner like we are, lace-up your sneaks and let's get started. Sweating through the Santa Monica streets is a genuinely Californian way to explore our bustling town....

Time to burn off those fish tacos you had at Blue Plate Taco and stretch your newly tanned legs. Our favorite routes include the wide grassy median along San Vicente Boulevard that continue for four miles to Ocean Avenue. At the widest part, it can accommodate up to 12 runners side-by-side. The Strand begins at Will Rogers State Beach and continues until Redondo Beach. The flat terrain and Pacific coastal views make it popular amongst hobby runners and sightseers. However, we suggest jogging in the hills behind Santa Monica’s Main Street for quality window shopping. Pop back into the Ocean View Hotel to freshen up before heading back to stores like Pacific Strand, Hollister, and Bicknell.

Experience the Magic of a Drive-In Movie

For a uniquely classic silver screen experience, we recommend going to see a film at the San Fernando Valley Drive-In Theatre, which is set to reopen this month....

To maintain social distance, moviegoers are turning to a vintage trend for a safer way of spending time at the cinema. For a uniquely classic silver screen experience, we recommend going to see a film at the San Fernando Valley Drive-In Theatre, which is set to reopen this month.

Formerly located in Lake Balboa, Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley Drive-In Theatre will soon be opening at a new destination within the area. Since all guests watch a movie from the privacy of their cars with audio broadcasted on the radio, social distancing protocol is built-in as part of this retro nighttime activity. Plus, there’s a nostalgic charm to watching a motion picture beneath the stars from the safety of your vehicle.

While the first drive-in movie theatre was opened in 1915, outdoor drive-in theatres peaked in popularity during the 1950s and early 1960s. It’s only natural, then, that San Fernando Valley Drive-In Theatre will be showing a stellar selection of classic films this month, including The Sandlot, Grease, and Jurassic Park. At its new location in Westfield Fashion Square - about 20 minutes from Ocean View - the San Fernando Valley Drive-In Theatre will be showing each movie at 8:30 pm, beginning on Thursday, August 13th.

How the Hollywood Sign Came to Be

It’s arguably the most iconic landmark in all of Los Angeles. Sitting high above the city, the Hollywood Sign is a quintessential part of the LA skyline. It’s one of the most recognizable sights in popular culture, akin to America’s history of fame and stardom. But where did the Hollywood Sign come from originally?

The first version of the Hollywood Sign was built in 1923 to advertise a residential development within the Hollywood Hills. This community was called “Hollywoodland”, which is what the original sign read. During the 1940s, the sign had begun to deteriorate, and the letter “H” was destroyed. However, in 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce became owners of the sign and took over responsibility for its maintenance. The sign was then shortened to simply “Hollywood” to reference the city below. In 1973, it was officially declared a Historical Landmark by LA’s Cultural Heritage Board. To this day, the legendary marker can be spotted throughout the City of Angels.

On your next visit to Santa Monica, lose the crowds and take charge of your own tour by renting a bike and hitting up the Marvin Braude Bike Path. Locals love this inexpensive and green way to explore the city. Also known as “The Strand,” the Marvin Braude Bike Path is a multi-use, recreational trail that stretches 22 miles down the Pacific Coastline, making it an excellent way to discover Santa Monica without worrying about getting lost. The trail is also friendly to foot traffic, but we recommend biking to cover more distance. You can rent a bike at Will Rogers State Park and take it all the way to the end of the trail at Torrance County Beach. You’ll have no issues seeing the many hotspots that Santa Monica has to offer, all while getting in some great exercise and people-watching along the way.

Your Start to Surfing in Santa Monica

Whether you’re looking for private or group lessons, there are tons of opportunities to hone your surfing skills on nearby shores....

With a number of surf schools and instructors to learn from, Santa Monica offers beginners a stellar selection of resources. All visitors have to do is glance at the waves by Santa Monica Pier to see the immense popularity of surfing in the area. With that said, whether you’re looking for private or group lessons, there are tons of opportunities to hone your surfing skills on nearby shores.

It’s important to remember that the waters of Santa Monica can sometimes be crowded with surfers, so hitting the waves earlier in the day or during the week can guarantee you some more open water. Additionally, before setting off for a day of surfing, it’s always a good idea to go online and check the surfing conditions in Los Angeles. The ocean swell, tides, and the wind are all factors that affect the water’s surfing conditions. Also, the waters of Santa Monica Bay tend to be on the chillier side, so we recommend wearing a wetsuit to keep warm in the water.

The time has come to grab all your green gear and go grab yourself a green beer. One of our favorite holidays has arrived, and we couldn't be more excited to spend the day celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. In Southern California, we love to party and this holiday gives us the perfect excuse — we have tons of great bars to visit in Santa Monica, but if you’re going to go out this year, you need to do it right. O'Brien's Irish Pub, Sonny McLean’s Irish Pub, Ye Olde King’s Head, and Jameson’s Pub are all traditional Irish bars that are just five minutes from our hotel. When you step inside, it feels like you are stepping right out of LA and right into a small pub in Ireland. All of these pubs serve traditional Shepard's Pie and Guinness, so grab your gang and get ready to hit the streets of Santa Monica this leprechaun season.

It’s the end of an era, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate. Come help the city of Santa Monica ring in the Lunar New Year on Saturday, January 25th. This year we will commemorate the year of the rat with cultural dancing, delicious food, and a whole lot of fun. Some of our favorite events include the Chinese Lion Dance, stilt walkers, elaborate costumes, and of course, the food.

Although the year of the rat may sound a little less desirable than some of the other animals, it is actually an omen of surplus and wealth! It is the first sign of all the Zodiac, making it a powerful and youthful sign. Don’t run away from the rodent this 2020, the Lunar New Year will only bring you closer to what your heart truly desires. Stop by this years festival, you may just pick up more than you bargained for!

It’s December, which means it's officially holiday season on the Third Street Promenade! Join the city of Santa Monica for their annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, December 5th and the fun festivities that will be happening all month long. The tree lighting is a spectacular time to visit the promenade—the glittering lights of the tree will really help give your holiday cheer a little boost. Get your photo or your pet's pic with Santa and Mrs. Claus, right in the center of the action, but not before you lace up your skates and hit the ice to get you feeling like you're really in the north-pole. Winterlit will be available during the weekends to squeeze in shopping for holiday decorations and gifts. There will also be the annual Menorah lighting beginning on December 22nd. We can’t help but smile, because in our opinion it's finally the most wonderful time of the year!

We love our little spot by the beach, but a trip to Los Angeles is not complete until you make a stop at one of the many eccentric neighborhoods that are hidden all around the city. One of our favorite places to spend the afternoon is in Little Tokyo. This electric spot is a happy medium between tradition and modern waves. Little Tokyo sprouted up in 1886 and has been evolving ever since—you can find great ramen here as well as ancient Japanese gardens and authentic shops. Just like Japan, it doesn’t secure a large amount of space, but do not let the size of Little Tokyo prevent you from experiencing this larger-than-life cultural attraction. Stroll along East Temple Street to feel like you just hopped on a private jet to take spend a Saturday afternoon on the island itself. We have no doubt that you will be wowed by this cool, eclectic neighborhood while visiting us here at the Ocean View Hotel.

Stick up for the Santa Monica Pier this Monday, September 9th. Santa Monica is celebrating 110 years of this iconic structure by inviting everyone to come down for free and discounted family-friendly rides. Did you know that if it wasn’t for the protests in the 1970s to protect the adjacent piers, that the skyline of Santa Monica could look much different today? If you are a history buff or just a stone-cold Santa Monica lover, come down to Ocean Avenue on the 8th and 9th to watch the reenactment of the 1972 grassroots fight to stop the demolition of the Santa Monica Pier. We know this pier is full of learning potential—from the start of its creation for fishing lessons to the aquarium—and simply the value of quality time with the people you love most. But if there is one important thing you take away from the piers 110th birthday, is the power of protest for the things we believe in!

What is New Year's Eve without fireworks? That is one of the best ways to ring in the new year! Santa Monica is the perfect spot for firework viewing because you don’t just get one show you get two.
